I have a month of queue going on, due to travelling and mind-broadening stuff. The truth is out there, and so is a lot of bullshit, but that just fertilises the truth.

Colbert’s Comfort

I just watched Colbert interview Jim Holt, and he said something that I find strange: That the idea that God created the universe comforts him.

I don’t think he really gets it; the idea that God created the universe should terrify him. The idea that there is a point to a persons life, something they should be doing or working out or living, is disturbing, because it means we can live our life wrong. That we can just fail at life.

I find atheist ideas to be very comforting. If there’s no reason for our existence it doesn’t matter what we do. Whatever we choose to do is just the same as anything else. Whether we feed the poor or go on a shooting rampage is largely irrelevant. If there’s nothing we’re supposed to do, then we can’t stuff it up. That would be very comforting to me.
